About the District Clerk’s Office

The Travis County District Clerk maintains the official record of proceedings on all court cases heard in the district courts and some cases in county court-at-Law #4. This involves criminal, civil, and family/domestic relations cases. Most of the case records are available for public viewing, but some are confidential, either by law or by court order.

The Criminal Division maintains criminal case records on felonies, which are the most serious crimes, and some misdemeanor cases. Grand Jury proceedings are also coordinated through the District Clerk’s office. Part of the District Clerk’s duties on criminal cases is to issue arrest warrants, commitments to jail, and subpoenas and to prepare judgments and appeal records.

The Civil Division maintains civil case records such as personal injury, contract, real estate, and consumer lawsuits as well as tax collections. Because Travis County is the home of the State Capital, the Civil Division also receives appeals of nearly all state administrative agency rulings.

The Family Division handles all divorces, child support and custody cases, adoptions, family protection, and name changes. The Civil and Family Division, in addition to maintaining records, issues citations, subpoenas, and writs, plus prepares abstracts of judgment, name change certificates, and appeal records.

All three divisions of the District Clerk collect court costs, fees, and fines, either as a case is filed or a service requested or after a court judgment is handed down.

In addition to its responsibilities on civil, family, and criminal case records, the District Clerk also coordinates all jury matters for the courts and the City of Austin and is also a passport acceptance agency.
